“He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many,” read a statement shared to his website

Jimmy Buffett, the singer-songwriter known for his enduring anthem “Margaritaville,”  has died at the age of 76.

A statement released on his website and social media late Friday, read, “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs. He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

An accompanying caption on Instagram said, “God Speed & thank you for everything Jimmy.”

Buffett, whose breezy, Caribbean-influenced rock and enthusiasm for margaritas and relaxation had won him a diehard fanbase called Parrotheads, had consistently played about 30 to 50 concerts a year for the past half a century.

In May, he postponed a concert in Charleston, South Carolina, after an unexpected trip to the hospital “to address some issues that needed immediate attention.” In a message to his fans on his website, the singer-songwriter, who is 76, did not disclose why he needed to see a doctor but felt well enough to quote Mark Twain. “These few words from Mark Twain about life changes,” he wrote, “seemed perfect to pass on at this time. ‘Challenges,’ he said, ‘make life interesting, however overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.’”
